Crime- the violation of a society's formally enacted criminal law.
  • Clive robs a gas station in the beginning of the movie right before he meets Jessica who stole earrings from the local mall.

Stigma- a powerful negative label that greatly changes a person's self-concept and social identity.
  • Clive has the stigma of a convict because he steals money and also breaks the law when he’s in Jessica’s body.

Criminal Justice System- a formal response by police, courts, and prison officials to alleged violations of the law.
  • At the very end of the movie Clive is arrested for all the illegal things he did in Jessica’s body like mugging people and stealing their wallets.
Deviance- the recognized violation of cultural norms.
  • Jessica was deviant in the movie when she stole the earrings from Madame Mambuza and ran away from mall security.


Victimless Crimes- Violations of law in which are no readily apparent victims.
  • When Jessica stole the earrings from Madame there were no instant victims, because the victims had not realized they had been harmed.
Crimes Against the Person- Direct violence or the threat of violence against others.
  • The movie opens at a pep rally for Jessica's school, as a prank she has Hildenburg dress up in the school rivals uniform. Hildenburg is told she is doing it because the theme is unity for all teams, but instead has toilet paper thrown at her from the student body.
Criminal Recidivism- Subsequent offenses by people convicted of crimes.
  • Clive commits theft on a regular basis and continues to do so throughout the movie.
Societal Protection- Rendering an offender incapable of further offenses temporarily through incarceration or permanently by execution.
  • At the end of the movie Clive is arrested for all of his burglaries to prevent him from stealing for a certain period of time.
